Are You at Risk? Don't Ignore These Hernia Symptoms
You should attend our camp if you notice any of the following:
- A visible lump or bulge near the belly button, groin, or a previous surgery scar — more noticeable when you stand, cough, or lift heavy objects
- Pain or discomfort in the abdomen or groin, especially when bending over or carrying weight
- A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the lower abdominal region
- A bulge that disappears when lying down but reappears on standing — a classic early hernia sign
- A burning or aching sensation at the bulge site that worsens as the day goes on
- Nausea or vomiting along with abdominal swelling — seek urgent attention if this occurs
Important Warning: Hernias do not heal on their own. Left untreated, they can become strangulated — a life-threatening emergency requiring urgent surgery. Early diagnosis is safer, simpler, and far less expensive.
What Is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue wall. The most common types we see and treat include:
Inguinal Hernia (Groin Hernia)
The most common type, especially in men. Tissue pushes through a weak spot in the groin muscles, causing a visible bulge in the groin area.
Umbilical Hernia (Belly Button Hernia)
A bulge near the navel. Common in both babies and adults, especially in women after pregnancy.
Incisional Hernia (Post-Surgery Hernia)
Occurs at the site of a previous abdominal surgery scar where the muscle wall has weakened over time.
Epigastric Hernia (Upper Abdomen Hernia)
A small bulge that appears between the navel and chest, often related to excess weight or frequent straining.
Femoral Hernia (Upper Thigh Hernia)
Less common and more frequent in women. Tissue protrudes into the canal carrying blood vessels to the thigh.
Common Causes of Hernia
Heavy lifting, chronic coughing, obesity, straining during bowel movements, previous abdominal surgeries, and age-related muscle weakness are among the leading causes.
How Is Hernia Treated? Surgery is the only permanent, effective treatment for hernia. Options include open hernia repair with mesh reinforcement, or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery which involves smaller cuts, less pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring. Our doctors will recommend the best approach based on your individual condition.
